WELCOME TO

Messack Garden Workshops

Penny Essex and Robin Leach are pleased to introduce
the one-day workshops for 2011

Messack Farm House, St Just in Roseland, is a haven of peace and quiet, set in 3 acres of grassy meadow, with stone walls, trees and hedges, an orchard, polytunnel, enclosed veg garden, bog and pond areas, ducks, chickens and geese. It is a wonderful teaching garden in which to demonstrate, develop and create a beautiful garden – and re-kindle the joy of growing.

The workshops will take place in the polytunnel and the
potting shed but most importantly there will be lots of hands-on practical work in the garden – pruning, dividing, splitting plants, discussing design and the habit of plants etc, to develop new skills and hone your existing skills.

1 In the Vegetable Garden, for example, we will be demonstrating how to
plan, plant and grow vegetables organically. So if you have always wanted to grow your own food, but thought it too time-consuming and difficult, think again! If you want to have a pumpkin and squash patch, grow food by the back door or want to grow the longest runner bean in the local show, we will demonstrate how. We will be looking at new and forgotten varieties – to inspire people to grow something new.

2 In the potting shed and polytunnel, we will be exploring the
habits of plants, their needs and cultural differences. Also, discussing the pruning of shrubs, soft and top fruit, propagation and how to grow successful bulbs, whether for Christmas with our Hippeastrum expert, or all year round in the garden. We will be looking at container growing and being creative with pots, and also how to make beautiful flower arrangements with what you have growing in your garden.

3 We will be running workshops to encourage
old rural crafts, such as hedge laying, coppicing, stone walling and willow weaving, both practical eg willow hurdles and willow sculptures. We will be building new walls and stone steps and repairing old walls.

4 We will be exploring
the art of bee keeping and what to grow in your garden to encourage bees and insects, while setting up a hive and demonstrating ways to use the comb, honey and wax.

We want people to feel inspired again – to re-discover their garden and create something completely new, like a cut flower garden full of beautiful
colour and scent, or just make the garden easier to manage so it is even more enjoyable to be and entertain in. We hope you will leave the workshops feeling inspired and bursting with ideas.

We also run a
Garden Design and Maintenance service. Whether you want us to come along for an hour or two looking around your garden, advising on small changes, or a full design, give us a ring.
